2nd Edition February 13th 2010

The first ‘Bird's Eye View’ seemed to go down pretty well so here we go with the second.

From The Board

We had our second board meeting on the 3rd of February. Results from the first club survey were presented to the board. Firstly we would like to thank everyone who took the time to fill in the survey - we had 33 responses this gave us some fantastic insight into what our members are thinking and what they want for our club. Some of the points that were discussed were the issue of Sunday bowling where the majority of members were happy with the start time of 10:00 am and the wearing of whites. 80% of our members were happy with how the games are set up through the week, with 20% not satisfied - we encourage those that are unhappy to grab the board and set up the teams. We have had quite a few different people setting up the games and this has resulted in some great games. On another subject we asked about the daily catering that is provided: 90% of people said they would be happy to contribute to the cost of providing quality snacks and beverages. We will be putting a secure container for members to add contributions to help maintain the quality. Donations will be worked on an honour system, so if you are a big eater do the right thing and put in a fair amount. Results also show nearly everyone realizes the importance of recruiting new members and similar numbers also enjoy the idea of competing for their club in tournaments. This is very useful information for the board to formulate the future of our club. All our members that have internet access are happy to be contacted by email but we will also continue to post messages on the information board next to the snack table and provide hard copies for those without email. Our next big project is to get our website updated within the next month. If you have any photos or stories that may be suitable please send them to Stuart. I think everyone is enjoying Dave Lambert's Personal Bios on some of our members - another great job from one of our club icons.

Friendship Days

It was a very pleasing turnout for our first Friendship Day with Holmby Park and Beverly Hills, and I think everyone had a great day catching up with new and old friends. The next one will be coming up this Saturday at Holmby Park - arrive at 11:30 for a 12:00pm start. Saturdays at Holmby are optional whites or casual. We encourage our members to try out the great hospitality our friends at Holmby put on. Many members from the three clubs are enjoying dual membership and we are sure this will continue to have positve outcomes for Lawn Bowling in Los Angeles as well as potential new friendships among the local clubs. We welcome all our new dual members: Tom, Linda, Cecil, Boris, Louise, Linda, George, Richard, Cheryl, Evelyn and Colin.

Winter League Results

In the last few weeks the Winter League has been hampered by wet weekends; some of the games were postponed but have been made up already. Our club has been having some mixed results in both Leagues. The Development side has struggled in some of their away games but performed well on their home green. Ray has been experimenting with some different combinations and it will be just a matter of time before they get some good results. They did it tough down at Hermosa on a very slow green to go down 6-24 and then last Saturday played Alhambra on a super fast synthetic green losing 12-18. Dixie and Jackie had their chances but could not get the points. Amo The Mexican champion has gone back to his drawing game and has been bowling well - he and Chrissy Dunn won their pairs game.

In the Trophy League Marty, Phil , Stuart and Todd played 2 games in four days. On Wednesday they played the Santa Anita Green Team at home and had a dominating 29-1 win. The boys played with determination all day. On Saturday they traveled to Alhambra, always a tough match-up. The weather was picture perfect and their greens were running around 16 seconds. The rinks game was tight all the way. With SM holding a 1-point advantage with one end to go, the magician Houdini played two superb shot to grab two resulting in a final score of 13-14 with the point score 4-6. After lunch it was onto the pairs. Todd and Marty had a solid 8-2 win while Stuart and Phil battled all the way to win 6-4. The final score was 18-12 and a great day of bowls. 4 rounds finished and with 1 postponed round to go against Pomona the Trophy team remains unbeaten. Go Bombers!

Thanks to all our members who are getting involved with all the different aspects of running our club. The guys that are setting up are doing a tremendous job: Dave, Ray, John, Richard, Amo and Fred. Don’t forget to lend a hand when it comes time to packing up. The snack and beverage section has been particularly well-presented and I think everyone appreciates the time that is put in by Marty, Jackie, Chrissy and Java Joe, just to mention a few. It’s great to be receiving all the input and suggestions from members. I think you will agree that we have a very special thing happening each week on the green - lots of fun and laughs with friends in the sunshine. I think it’s wonderful to be a member of Santa Monica Lawn Bowling Club.
