Well, a lot has been happening in our club the last couple of months, so forgive me if I miss anything.
Jack Beckley All-Star
In March we had the latest Jack Beckley All-Star tournament - this is the 8th year and it was a great success thanks to our hard-working volunteers. We have another Jack Beckley rinks tournament in October and already players from the Southwest are organizing their teams.
Phil and Stuart are so proud of our club's members efforts that enabled us to host such a smooth tournament. Our volunteers have been the strength of the club this year and we are looking forward to lots of fun bowling throughout this year with some new initiatives to be rolled out in the next couple of months. Many visiting bowlers made favorable comments and passed on congratulations to our club. If any of the volunteers at the Jack Beckley tournament have not received an "I Love Bowling at Santa Monica" towel, please contact Stuart. I am going to mention all the volunteers - it’s an impressive amount and I hope I don’t forget anyone: Jackie, Amo, John, Dave, Bev, both Barbaras, Emma, Evelyn, Jerry, Joe, Noreen, Terri, Chris, Marty, Sam, Alan, Richard, Stuart, Phil, Fred, and Dixie Everyone worked so well together and it was pulled off without any problems.
Jack’s daughter Lynda and her husband Norman were thrilled to remain sponsors of this great tournament and as usual they were kind enough to present the winners with their prizes. Lynda advised us that Jack would have been 100 years old this year so of course we are all proud to celebrate this milestone. Ed Quo and his team were very worthy winners on the day.
President's Cup
This year's President's Cup was hosted by our friends at Holmby Park on the April 3rd and again the match went down to the last end in the last game, the same as 2009. Fortunately for our Club we held on to the Cup for another year. Thanks to Tom and Linda and all our friends at Holmby for putting on a wonderful day. We look forward to hosting the event in 2011 - Go Bombers!
English Tour
We also hosted the English touring group on April 7th. This was another tremendous visitation and our members enjoyed hosting the day. Our club enjoyed another day of close bowling and came out winners again. Thanks again to all our volunteers for making this another smooth event.
Open Day
On Saturday May 8th, we will be holding our annual open day. Phil Dunn is organizing not only Santa Monica but also coordinating the whole Southwest open day. Please be ready to help out where you can leading up to the 8th and also on the day if you can. These open days are a lot of fun for everyone involved and it gives us an opportunity to show off our sport to our local community.
Green Renovation
Club icon Dave Lambert is supervising the annual renovation of our greens - due to the unfortunate timing of some rain the renovations have been pushed back an extra week. Beverly Hills and especially Bill Wolff have been very generous with their hospitality while our greens are renovated. Our club is extremely lucky to have a member like Dave and he is the reason so many people comment on the great condition of our green. We should also make the time to acknowledge and thank Arturo, our green keeper, for all the great work he does for us. Another thanks goes to Dave for the great job he is doing writing up all the bios on our members - I think we all find it very interesting to see the diversity in our members background. I am sure everyone looks forward to the next profiles. Thanks, Dave!
Shed Renovation
Bill Wolff has completed another renovation in our equipment shed - he has redesigned and built shelves on both sides to help unclutter our equipment and bowls. For those who did not read Dave’s bio on Bill, he has built many efficient space-saving and work areas in the shed that it reminds me of Doctor Who’s Tartis. Many thanks, Bill, for another great job you have done for our club.
Suggestion Box
We have received two written suggestions in our suggestion box in the equipment shed. We appreciate the members who put them in - their suggestions will be presented at the next board meeting. We encourage anyone to put other suggestions in writing before the next meeting scheduled for the 5th of May. This is the most efficient way for issues to be discussed at board meetings. It can be something good or bad but hopefully you have some thoughts on a solution to an issue. Our volunteer board has been working very well and I am sure everyone appreciates the effort.
Winter League
Santa Monica's Trophy League Team played the Final of the Winter League against Laguna at Santa Anita on 18th of April. The team had gone through undefeated and were hopeful of a win but it was not to be. In a disappointing result, the boys were beaten 12-18. Still it has been a terrific 2 seasons for Todd, Marty, Phil, and Stuart.
Tournament Committee
We have just started a tournament committee with Barbara Lambert and Stuart Bell, and we're looking for two more members (1 man and 1 woman) to get the season started. Contact Stuart or Barbara if you're interested. The first tournament will be the Bud Wakeling, which will be played on a Sunday in late May and all our members and dual members will be eligible but you must sign up to play. Sign-up sheets will be put up the first week back at Santa Monica.
Lastly, a few of our bowlers have been playing in the huge Southwest Men's Open; we will let you know any results when they come in.
