On Sunday, April 20, SMLBC hosted the Second Annual Diagonal Tournament. Teams were entered as pairs; each pair bowled in four 7-end games, all of them on diagonal rinks of various lengths (from extremely short to one rink running the full length of the diagonal of the green). Before the bowling could begin, of course, all the bowls had to be washed, a task undertaken by SMLBC member Noreen Wilkie.

Jack Beckley 10-Star International Tournament

The 10-Star "International" Tournament, played on Sunday, March 11th, 2007, provided some exciting bowling throughout the three 12-end games.

It was a glorious, hot day and clearly each of the 4 teams (the United States, Europe, South Africa, and the Rest of the World) were determined to bring home maximum points under the Quinnell scoring system. Each 10-person team played singles, pairs, triples and rinks against their 3"international" opponents, "nationality" being that when under 21 years of age. Teams were also competing for a first place prize of $1,000 and a second place prize of $200.

Many of the matches were closely fought, bringing cheers from the onlookers and players alike. After the first game (USA v. S. Africa, Europe v. R. of World), each team, surprisingly, had won 31 points. After the second and third games, the strong U.S. contingent had pulled away somewhat, eventually winning with a total of 103.5 pts., with S. Africa second with 95, Europe with 87.5 and the Rest of the World (last year's winners!) finishing a close fourth with 86.

Congratulations go out to the United States team, which consisted of: Bill Reidy, captain, Tony Baer, Sam Benjamin, Chris Booth, Rosa Gandara, Anne Nunes, Jim Olsen, Michael Siddall, Joe Siegman and Roger Teskie.

The opposting captains this year were: South Africa - Ivan Hyland; Europe - Peter White; and the Rest of the World - Houdini Ho. Many thanks to all four captains for picking and organizing their respective teams.

Big thanks, too, to Dixie and Rosanna for, once again, providing a tasty, healthy lunch!

All in all, this was a most enjoyable day and we are particularly grateful to our sponsors, Linda and Norman Cohen, for their wonderful generosity in memory of our dear old friend, Jack Beckley.
