Southwest-Sanctioned Tommy Stirrat Mixed Triples Tournament

On March 25th, Phil Dunn, Marty Bierman and Jackie Stanley played in the Southwest-sanctioned Tommy Stirrat mixed triples tournament at Santa Ana.

Phil was the skip of the team, Marty played vice, and Jackie played lead. In the first match they played some members of the Santa Ana club and beat them 14 to 9. That put them at five plus on points.

In the second match, they competed against Bill Brault, Howard Harris and Christina (last name unknown), all from San Diego. Bill Brault is on the United States national team and he skipped for the San Diego team. Phil, Marty and Jackie beat them 15 to 5, which put them 15 points up.

The third and final match was against the best team in the tournament. This was no coincidence: the tournament was reseeded prior to the final game, and Phil, Marty, and Jackie were in second place. Their competition for the final game was U.S. national team member Tony Baer, women's singles champion Rosa Gandara, and a member of last year's winning team, Phil Luth. Tony, Rosa and Phil Luth were holding 19 points overall heading into the final game, but they lost to Phil, Marty and Jackie by 3 points (9 to 6). This dropped them to 16 points and also out of first place.

There were two teams (the team from SMLBC and a team skipped by Michael Siddall, another former national singles champion) that finished the day at 3-0. Because of the point spread, Phil, Marty, and Jackie won the tournament.

They will have their names engraved on a trophy kept at Santa Ana and also won the first place prize money. It was another wonderful day for the Santa Monica Lawn Bowling Club and for these terrific club representatives. Congratulations!
