The
President's Cup
Bud
Wakeling is one happy man. Bud is the President of the Santa Monica Lawn
Bowling Club and was very happy to receive the prestigious President's Cup
from Holmby Park Lawn Bowling club President Jack Edwards in
the local derby.
Sunday, June 25th, turned out to be a great day for our club. The
format of the competition was triples, with 5 teams from each club playing 10 ends in the morning then 10 more ends in
the afternoon. The teams were changed slightly for the afternoon
games to allow reserves to get into the action.
The day was sunny
with a cooling breeze and the greens were running beautifully -
special thanks to Dave Lambert and Amo Garcia for their constant
maintenance.
In
the morning games, Santa Monica won 3 games to 2 with many close
games. We stopped for a fantastic lunch with a surprise delivery
of excellent pizza and finished with some excellent cakes for dessert. After
a bit of a chat with our friends we waddled back onto the green
to finish the tournament. With 4 games finished the score was
2 all and it was down to the last game to decide the result. If
Holmby LBC won the last game, they would retain the President's Cup, since this year's tournament would end in a draw.
Fortunately,
our team came through and left it in no doubt. The final game went to Santa Monica, so the afternoon result was the same as the morning: 3 games to 2. The final result, combining the morning and afternoon games, was: Santa Monica 6, Holmby Park 4. We had some
brilliant performances from some of our rookies such as Phil,
Barb, Jackie, Nathan, Ryan, and Rob. We also had some of our other
rookies there to support the club and enjoy the tournament and
observe lawn bowling played in a more competitive format.

Special
thanks goes out to all the members involved in making the day
such a great success. These include Vice-president Bill Wolff,
team organizer Ray Spiro, Amo Garcia for organizing the setting and packing
up of the rinks, Dixie Vanderloop and Barbara Lambert, and of course all our players
for doing a fantastic job. At the end of the day both clubs
had a wonderful day on the green and everyone will be looking
forward to next year's challenge.
